Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter of their family. After her father died as a carnival barker, at the age of a young girl She was required to provide for the family by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. Following only two school years she left for an acting profession. Her path was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills in crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she wanted eluded. As a hat check girl at a nightclub she quit and returned to Boston. It was the New England Repertory Company was the first position she held as a regular actor. The company paid her performing during the daytime as an usherette. She been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she specialized in drama.
